Coastal, Felt and Driftwood Artist – Designs inspired by the sea

Over six months ago I spent a busy day at the Christmas Fair in Pembroke Castle and met many varied and talented stallholders (this is a great annual event and I would suggest putting it in your diary now!) One particular stall drew me back several times and I was captivated by the work of Sue Powell – she manages to somehow to really capture the natural beauty, colours and wildness of the West Wales coast. After chatting with Sue, we agreed to keep in touch and to arrange an interview in the summer.

We joined Sue at her home, and spent an enjoyable afternoon watching her at work and finding out more about her life as an artist in West Wales. When I had first seen her pictures at the Pembroke Castle event, I had not realised they are from felted wool and also had no idea of the labour-intensive work and skill that goes into each unique felted picture and her driftwood art.

En Plein Air – Artist Edward Dunn

Edward Dunn's painting of Newport Estuary in Spring - en plein air

This month Pembrokeshire Life Online is delighted to feature the work of local artist Ed Dunn – unlike previous interviewed artists, Ed paints ‘en plein air’ – he completes his work outside in the fresh air and discovered only in the last few years that this is his metier! I think you will agree, when you look at his Pembrokeshire landscapes, that he captures the light and atmosphere magnificently.

A Winston Churchill Memorial Trust award is a boost for this young luthier from South West Wales.

Creating electric guitars from recycled or salvaged materials, George Parfitt is founder of Dockyard Guitars in Pembroke Dock.  The award will enable him to explore the cultural Cigar Box Guitar Movement in U.S.A.

I first met George Parfitt sitting cross-legged on the grass in front of his tent at the 2016, ‘Unearthed In A Field’ festival. He was surrounded by a range of his cigar box guitars.

I next saw George before he dashed of to Europe for a couple of months in autumn last year. Here, I catch up with him again with some of his backstory from that interview and exciting news of his forthcoming pilgrimmage to take in the Cigar Box Guitar revolution in America.

Several thousand plastic ponchos, stored under the reception desk, were not needed when the BBC Antiques Roadshow came to Pembroke Castle.  The sun shone, there was a cooling breeze and the castle provided the perfect setting for this great event.

The Pembrokeshire Life Online team were delighted to be welcomed by the BBC, to bring you behind the scenes at the only Antiques Roadshow broadcast from Wales, this series.
