On the 1st of May 2015 a five year old girl from Pembroke Dock decided that she wanted to start raising money to help the ward that treated her father. She was hoping on raising £50 but two years on, she’s closing in on raising nearly £100,000!
Her story is truly remarkable…
Elly Neville started to fundraise to say thank you to the ward that treated her father Lyn. Lyn Neville had a bone marrow transplant in 2005 and subsequently spent a lot of time on the Ward 10 cancer facility at Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest.
Elly felt inspired to raise money to help refurbish the ward that helped her dad’s recovery.
Elly says, “I am fundraising for Ward 10 because with all of our money the nurses can get what they need for the people in hospital. I would like them to get some plumpy cushions and fluffy blankets to keep all the patients comfortable while they are in hospital. The nurses on ward 10 helped to make my Dad better when he was ill so this is to say thank you.”
Elly, who attends Pembroke Dock Community School, has now raised over £80,000 and is hoping to push on to £100,000.
During the two years Elly has became a local ambassador in her community and has met numerous celebrities, attended various functions and has been awarded for her efforts and received an inaugural British Citizens Youth Award Medal at the House of Lords last October, the only recipient from Wales.
Elly’s proud Dad, Lyn Neville said,
“When we started on the 1st of May 2015 we were only aiming to raise £50 but it took off with a Facebook campaign and it just kind of exploded. The money Elly raises is to be put towards patient environment and experience. It’s about giving the patients more dignity and comfort. At the moment Elly is enjoying the campaigning, and we’ll keep on going as long as Elly is happy to do it. We are just a small family trying to make a big difference to cancer services.”
Nicola Llewelyn, Head of Hywel Dda Health Charities said,
“I started with Elly on her journey two years ago and I would like to say a huge thank you to Elly and her family for their fantastic fundraising efforts. What she has achieved in two years is truly inspirational and her energy and enthusiasm is incredible. We very much appreciate Team Elly’s support, which continues to help us in improving cancer services locally, particularly in relation to Ward 10, Withybush Hospital.”
