These short-legged digging omnivores are surely one of most controversial mammals in any rural community, due to the alleged connection with bovine TB. Under the Protection of Badgers Act, 1992, these shy crepuscular creatures (active at dawn and dusk) are rarely spotted but leave traces of their activities and five-toed claw-marks around their setts, in field and hedgerow edges. It is an offence to “…kill or injure a badger, or to damage, destroy or interfere with its sett or allow a dog to enter.” Illegal baiting continues and it is estimated to account for about 10,000 badger deaths annually. In Pembrokeshire, the Sealyham dog breed was originally developed for badger culling.

Not long now until the broadcast of the two Antiques Roadshow programmes from Pembroke Castle, filmed last September – here is our report from the day for you to enjoy again and get ready for the BBC One Sunday night treat on April 9th and 16th!

Several thousand plastic ponchos, stored under the reception desk, were not needed when the BBC Antiques Roadshow came to Pembroke Castle.  The sun shone, there was a cooling breeze and the castle provided the perfect setting for this great event.

The Pembrokeshire Life Online team were delighted to be welcomed by the BBC, to bring you behind the scenes at the only Antiques Roadshow broadcast from Wales, this series.

From The Blue Lagoon, Abereiddi to The Sloop at Porthgain

Traditionally my family’s favourite walk for over 25 years has been from the black sand and blue lagoon of Abereiddi to the well-known and highly recommended pub in Porthgain – The Sloop, so when my daughter brought her Spanish boyfriend to Wales for the first time, it was her choice of where to go.

This was also Cwtch, the border collie’s first time along this stretch of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park coast path. She loved it and so did our visitor, Sergio!
