HaverHUB Volunteers Open Evening.

The Old Post Office, Haverfordwest

Latest update – more Haverhelpers needed!

On Thursday 5th October 2017 an open evening was held to give interested locals a chance to see around the dilapidated old building and yards that will become the new Haverhub centre. After some successful and fabulously fun events, the clearing and fund-raising continues.

Two sheds and courtyard to be open by Christmas

With grant applications pending the team behind this great venture, led by Gitti Coats, aim to get the sheds and yard ready for public use by the end of this year. John Collier and some colleagues are working now to get the shed doors opened for the first time in over 30 years – once that is done, the pigeons and their accumulated droppings can be removed – don’t worry – no pigeons will be harmed, but they must be persuaded to move on!

More than a dozen new volunteers were shown around the premises this week and already, incredible offers of help have been made by these latest recruits – for example, guidance in premises management and instant hands-on help with moving things and more clearance work. Other new projects planned are teams of gardeners and an arts group to create huge works of art to display in Haverhub – this is led by Arthur Brooker, inspired by his latest Break Out of the Gallery event in Haverfordwest. Free architectural drawings have been completed to help move the plans along for the whole building and Gitti has been overwhelmed with ideas and suggestions for the building’s use. These include meeting rooms, market stalls, hotdesks and business start-ups.

The sunny August Bank Holiday weekend saw a great event and plenty of fun for all ages in the castle and 40 acres of garden and woodlands of Picton Castle. Arts, crafts and produce alongside stalls, food, and drink were much enjoyed, particularly the village cream teas and thirst-quenching choices in the beer tent. Entertainment from the Ukelele Pirates and a fun dog show with agility classes were also on offer.

Poster announcing Party at The Old Post Office, Haverfordwest, 8th SeptemberAfter ten years working opposite the abandoned Old Post Office Building, Gitti Coats now finds herself leading the Community Interest Company set up to save this wonderful building and create a fabulous resource centre for our county town. Come to the party and have a first peep at this new community centre.

Gitti had become concerned about the slow progress in the regeneration of Haverfordwest’s once thriving centre and distraught at the number of neglected buildings falling into disrepair. She pestered local councillors and met with the Director of Regeneration on several occasions, to discuss various options around the setting up of her vision of a community hub for the town. Gitti’s dream was to have a central place for the many enthusiastic people to collaborate in bringing the life back into Haverfordwest.

Only a few months ago, the Old Post Office building in Quay Street was suggested and Gitti arranged to view the property with the owner on a visit from his home in Dorset. Anyone who visits the building will be astonished by its deceptive size and spaciousness. Parts of the property had been severely water-damaged after lead roofing had been stolen, and the outdoor sheds infested with pigeons, but it is still easy to see past these horrors and marvel at the beautiful proportions and potential of the property.

Shocked at how much dilapidation had occurred, the owner put the property on the market early in 2017 and negotiations regarding lease costs were not going too well. There was not enough time or funding to explore the option of a council purchase, for later acquisition by the community, and Gitti began to feel that another location would have to be found. A Facebook page had enlisted many offers of practical help and amongst those was one for financial help from Jerry Evans, who is already renovating the old SWALEC building in Haverfordwest and is passionately committed to “waking up the town”. He purchased the building and offered it to the Haverhub project for a much-reduced rent and the serious fundraising and planning began!

Story telling is and has always been such an important part of the human condition. Most of us spend our lives trying hard to live our best story and, with the stories we tell ourselves and those we choose to share we endeavour to influence our worlds. In what we say, with words and deeds; art, music, dance, fashion and lifestyle, choices we make to be present or absent, the extent to which we give or take. Our stories abound.
