Great news for patients on Hywel Dda childrens wards –

Nolan Charity Fund recently presented iPads and DVD players to Bronglais, Glangwili and Withybush hospitals worth over £1,300.

The iPads and DVD players will make a huge difference to patient experience and will go towards making a stay in hospital as relaxing and comfortable as possible while keeping children amused during their illness.

The Nolan Charity Fund is a Welsh charity set up in 2015 by uPVC businessman Nolan Nicholas to work hand in hand for the benefit of worthy causes in Wales. Sarah Cleevely, Fundraising & Events Manager, Nolan Charity Fund, said: , “I was delighted to meet the staff on the new children’s ward at Withybush Hospital and to be able to present them with iPads and DVD players. I am pleased that the Nolan Charity Fund has been able to provide Hywel Dda Health Charities with this support and the children in its care. I hope the equipment we have donated will go some way in providing the children visiting Withybush, Bronglais and Glangwili hospitals with some comfort during their stay.”

A Boat trip to remember – Falcon Boats.

Ffion Rees Falcon Boats Pembrokeshire feature

Exploring Pembrokeshire’s coastline by boat is a “must do”.

Video Inside

Holidaymakers and locals can experience the wonderful offshore marine life and scenery from a variety of boat trip companies and this can be the highlight of many trips to the county.

Bouncing across the waves in a rigid inflatable boat, or RIB, is exhilarating, while gentling cruising around the cliffs and investigating the coves and caves is a magical experience. You can be so close to the seabirds and seals or porpoises while gaining a new insight into the fantastic coastal scenery and the vital importance of the wild unspoilt and protected waters.

Pembrokeshire Culture Club, a local Meetup group, were lucky to take a trip from St. Justinian’s with Falcon Boats around Ramsey Island

Coastal, Felt and Driftwood Artist – Designs inspired by the sea

Over six months ago I spent a busy day at the Christmas Fair in Pembroke Castle and met many varied and talented stallholders (this is a great annual event and I would suggest putting it in your diary now!) One particular stall drew me back several times and I was captivated by the work of Sue Powell – she manages to somehow to really capture the natural beauty, colours and wildness of the West Wales coast. After chatting with Sue, we agreed to keep in touch and to arrange an interview in the summer.

We joined Sue at her home, and spent an enjoyable afternoon watching her at work and finding out more about her life as an artist in West Wales. When I had first seen her pictures at the Pembroke Castle event, I had not realised they are from felted wool and also had no idea of the labour-intensive work and skill that goes into each unique felted picture and her driftwood art.

Luke Harding's effort pays off for Pembrokeshire charity fundraising

Pembrokeshire based Luke Harding decided that he would like to raise funds for Paul Sartori recently, adding “Paul Sartori and a couple of other local charities were chosen, as the work you all do in the local community is unquestionable and goes a long way.”

Luke raised money at the ‘Have a Laugh Comedy Club’ charity night at Theatre Gwaun in Fishguard where fundraising efforts from ticket sales and the raffle raised £1300.  Paul Sartori Foundation benefitted from his fundraising, along with Shalom and Ward 10 at Withybush Hospital.

“Go and see it” – Monty Don

There can be few more decisive reviews of a garden than this one from the star of BBC Gardeners’ World, so Pembrokeshire Life Online’s gardening correspondent, Jim Saul did just that.

On a glorious sunny May afternoon we were fortunate to be welcomed and shown around this enchanting place just below Waun Fach, east of Fishguard, by the creator, Christina Shand and her husband David. When she moved into Dyffryn Fernant in 1996, there was a run-down farmhouse and overgrown garden so Christina set about transforming it all, bit by bit.

Dyffryn Fernant garden map

The six acres of many different, natural, stylised and exotic gardens include a quarry area as you enter, then the front garden and kitchen garden – which were the first areas to be tackled -A plant nursery, rickyard, orchard, fernery, bog and woodland areas. From the gloriously pink house there are far-reaching views across the gardens to fields and the Preselis. Within the garden, a Cwm, a pond and the area referred to as ‘Beyond’ – where visitors are welcome to picnic. From the magic garden the views are wonderful.

En Plein Air – Artist Edward Dunn

Edward Dunn's painting of Newport Estuary in Spring - en plein air

This month Pembrokeshire Life Online is delighted to feature the work of local artist Ed Dunn – unlike previous interviewed artists, Ed paints ‘en plein air’ – he completes his work outside in the fresh air and discovered only in the last few years that this is his metier! I think you will agree, when you look at his Pembrokeshire landscapes, that he captures the light and atmosphere magnificently.
