The award-winning Blue Flag surfing beach at Whitesands is one of the most famous in Wales and, by Pembrokeshire standards, can get quite busy in the summer. There are seasonal car park charges and it can often be popular enough to use the two overflow parking fields.

Being so close to the tiny city of St. David’s and renowned for the fabulous surf, Whitesands is a favoured destination of beach-lovers from all over the world. With a cafe, toilets and a lifeguard, this stunning location is loved by families, walkers and serious watersports enthusiasts alike.

At Christmas-time, most 10 year old boys would be looking forward to receiving gifts but Cameron Potter, from Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, South West Wales, has donated the Welsh Team Football, used by the Squad during 2006 – 2007, to help Pembrokeshire based hospice at home charity, the Paul Sartori Foundation, to raise funds. The football features some-well known signatures, including John Toshack, Ryan Giggs, Joe Ledley and Craig Bellamy and comes with the appropriate paperwork.

With the bird bans recently lifted, I was desperate to do some new routes and explore some un-climbed sections of cliffs that are off limits for much of the summer. I’d done a handful of new routes at Pointz Castle, north of Newgale, last year and now there’s scope for loads more.

Pembrokeshire offers some fabulous roads to ride on. In fact, there’s a total of 1200 miles of riding pleasure in the county and most of it allows traffic free enjoyment of some fast, winding routes with good quality surfaces. If you are a competent rider, there are plenty of challenges to test your skills and provide plenty of thrills. There are straights that demand an open throttle, heading into big open vistas, coast roads that tempt the unwary to take too long a glance out to sea and descents into wooded valleys that will check the smoothness in your gear changes and your brakes.

This great book by Reg Goddard is a must for anybody interested in Pembrokeshire’s surf culture. 

Chapter 1 – The Early Years

It feels strange looking back after all these years on how the surfing scene in Pembrokeshire came about.

In our little corner of Wales we had no surf films to watch; just the odd news bulletin about some surfers riding the ‘Cribbar’* or such like, but slowly and surely it was evolving. My early memories of Pembrokeshire surfing are as such.

I can always remember being drawn to the sea and had my first surf on those ply wood belly boards that were in use in those very early days of the 1950’s and 1960’s.

I remember seeing two surfers walking down Newgale beach and thinking I’d like to try that. They had Malibu surfboards under their arms – the first I’d seen.
