Tenby Young Writers

The Tenby Young Writers Group Poetry and Prose

The talented young writers meeting in Tenby Library have turned their attention and their pens to grief and loss this term and here are two wonderful examples of their work.

Beautiful
luxurious / spontaneous
debris rises from
the ashes of the
fallen sadness, colours of red,
blue / yellow rising around the black,
almost illuminous in anyone’s eyes, the bands
of colour rise to the stars
then immediately in slow motion
before hitting the stars
leave me in
darkness once
again.

I walked. The trees lurched ominously over my head. Watching over me, dark guardians. I approached the clearing and the pale grey leaves created a face and stared purely into my soul. I passed the empty eyes, they tracked me.
A small hunched woman approached, a black hood shrouded her face all I could make out were her piercing blue eyes. She edged nearer. Whispers rang from her mouth, too faint to make out.
“There is blood on your hands young one,” she gently croaked. I could just make out her features, soft veined cheeks, a button edged nose. “Blood on your hands.” she repeated.
I knew this face. The soft beauty of the eyes started me and triggered memories.
“Mum,” I cried. “You died”.
I reached out but only to a wisp of soft smoke that I grasped onto for as long as I could.

Matthew O’Neill – 14 years

The class runs every Tuesday in termtime. It’s open to anyone aged 11 – 16 (Year 7 up) and it’s completely free to take part. Supported by Tenby and Pembrokeshire Libraries, the Young Writers’ Group is an exciting way to meet new people. Sharpen your pencils and your imagination and simply enjoy the craft of writing.
